Mt Tarawera is the sacred mountain of the local Maori Tribes Ngati Rangitihi and Tuhourangi. As the highest mountain in our tribal area it plays an important role in Maori culture.

During the 1800s, the world famous pink and white terraces at Lake Rotomahana were regarded as the eighth wonder of the world and became New Zealand's first tourist attraction. On June 10th, 1886, Mt Tarawera erupted, destroying the terraces, devastating the surrounding landscape and villages with a loss of over 150 lives.

The villages of Moura, Te Ariki and Te Wairoa were totally buried by up to 20 meters of mud and ash. The greatest casualties were to the local Tuhourangi people. Their survivors settled with family at Whakarewarewa in Rotorua and other parts of The North Island of New Zealand where they re-built their lives. We are now back.

We invite you to share in our history here at Totally Tarawera.
