The Tarawera Trail at Lake Tarawera is predicted to become one of the great walks of New Zealand. Stage one is now completed.
The Tarawera Trail starts from the car park just south of The Buried Village on the western side of Lake Tarawera and runs through to Hot Water Beach a walk of approximately 15 kilometres.
You can also start the Trail from The Landing itself by using the Fish and Game Trail at the far right of The Landing. (Looking out towards the Lake)
Our Water Taxi departs and returns to The Landing at Lake Tarawera. We do not offer a shuttle service back up the hill to fetch your car from the Tarawera Trail Carpark. During the winter months the last pick up from Hot Water Beach is 3:00pm, once daylight saving starts that time changes to 3:30pm.
As you walk you will sense the awesome presence of the now ‘sleeping’ Mount Tarawera and enjoy the ever changing glimpses of the Lake and its many bays. Every bend reveals another dimension to this breath taking scenery. You will pass historic sites and past settlements, cross spring-fed streams teaming with trout in the spawning season, walk under Rata and Pohutakawa trees while shaded by groves of giant Mamaku ferns.
You can stop at isolated beaches with crystal clear water lapping at the shore or take a moment at the lookouts that offer views of Lake Rotomahana and the inlets of Lake Tarawera.
Most people take between 4 to 5 hours to walk the Trail. For your convenience there is signage along the Trail outlining the expected times of arrival between each landmark.
After your walk to Hot Water Beach reward yourself with a refreshing swim, a soak in the lake edge hot pool, or stay the night at the Department of Conservation, Hot Water Beach Campsite (You must pre-book to stay at Hot Water Beach Camp) The Water Taxi can bring your camping gear to Hot Water Beach Camp for an extra fee.
The Lake Tarawera Water Taxi is the only dedicated water taxi service that picks walkers up from Hot Water Beach. The boat will take you back to The Landing.
