Kanuka

Kanuka, on Lake Tarawera in the Rotorua region, is the second of our beautiful lake side campsites. Along with sister site, Te Rata, it is accessed by water taxi or walking track only, making it a beautifully off-the-beaten-path experience.

Set on Maori land, in a mystery location on the lake edge, Kanuka is secluded and peaceful with a style that reflects the rich Maori history of this area. Beautiful native bush surrounds the glamping site, with the large, comfortable tent enjoying direct access to the lake.

The campsite consists of one large tent with a queen-sized bed, tastefully decorated and featuring elements of Maori design – beautiful natural materials and traditional flax weaving. A solid camp kitchen, dining area and camp bathroom are set a short distance from the tents, providing everything you need for comfortable camping.

Your stay at Kanuka can be as relaxing or action packed as you want it to be. A beautiful, private, safe and sandy beach is 50m from your tent. Explore the lake edge on the kayak provided, discovering untouched bays and magical natural springs. Or walk the Tarawera Trail to a natural bush hotpool, a 1.5 hour walk from the site. You’ll pass historic sites and past settlements and cross spring-fed streams teaming with trout in the spawning season.

A stay at Kanuka, set in the discrete lake-edge, native bush location, under towering Pohutukawa is something very special. Surround yourself with nature, and appreciate the magic of a truly amazing place, filled with the sense of stories untold and steeped in history.

$340 per night, minimum 2 night stay. Enquiry required.

Inclusions in the per night rate:

• Return water taxi ride from Tarawera Landing to the campsite, including all your personal gear.
• Introductory commentary on the areas geothermal and cultural history by our experienced driver/guides
• When you arrive at the Glamping site you will receive a personal tour of the site and its amenities so you feel comfortable and at home in your new surroundings.
• Exclusive use of campsite, with one tent and up to 2 people.

Dinner and Breakfast Hampers suitable for a couple are available for you to cook and finish off yourself, at your leisure.

Dinner Hamper:
Hamper includes either Beef, Lamb, Chicken or Vegetarian main option, seasonal vegetables, salad with homemade dressing, ‘tried and true’ family dessert cake with fresh yoghurt, locally sourced cheese for your personalised cheese board, NZ Kawakawa craft beer and our choice of a NZ wine.

Breakfast Hamper:
Homemade granola with fresh seasonal fruits and yoghurt, sourdough bread for toasting with homemade jam or marmalade, free-range eggs and bacon. Enjoy with the fresh coffee or tea you have in your kitchen.
