RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

Totally Tarawera is dedicated to helping support and assist the whenua (land) for future generations.

Totally Tarawera welcomes visitors to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tarawera. We respect the history and cultural heritage unique to this region. We wish to protect the native flora and fauna of this area for generations to come. We greatly respect our environment and value the local community that we are a part of. We will encourage others to do the same.

To this end we will be undertaking a number of actions. Many of these may not be obvious, but you will see them if you look carefully. Our staff are fully trained and aware of our company’s environmental philosophy.

We use environmentally friendly cleaning products in our office and boats wherever practical.

We recycle our waste and separate out glass, cans, cardboard and plastics to minimize waste sent to landfill. We pick up litter we see around the lake. We try to limit the use of plastic bags.

When buying products, we try to use recycled products as first choice. We also prefer to use local suppliers to save energy costs.

Our skippers and crew are fully aware of marine regulations around water care and environmental pollution. Ongoing training and attendance at SMART courses provided by the Department of Conservation are a priority.

We hold Department of Conservation concessions for activities and guided walks around Lake Tarawera.  We actively support many conservation projects which benefit our land and local wildlife. Our commitment is to help native species in this area to survive.

Our boats are maintained to a very high standard. We regularly service our engines to minimise environmental pollution. This also results in the lowest possible fuel consumption.

Wherever possible our staff lead by example and encourage our customers to follow sustainable practices.
